About Halfway House
Who we are, why we built this site, and how we make recommendations.
Halfway House exists to help golfers build the right home simulator for their space, budget, and game — without wading through a hundred forum threads or watching twenty hours of YouTube reviews.
Who We Are
Halfway House is an independent editorial project, built and maintained by a Canadian software developer. It started as personal research — the kind of structured, plainspoken comparison guide we wished existed when we first started looking at home simulators.
A more detailed bio is in the works. For now, the work itself is the answer: every recommendation, comparison, and persona guide on this site reflects cross-referenced manufacturer specs, independent reviewer consensus, and community discussion.
Why This Site Exists
Most golf simulator content online falls into one of two camps:
The first is manufacturer marketing, which understandably prioritizes selling the hardware over giving honest tradeoffs. The second is hobbyist forum threads — genuinely useful but scattered across hundreds of pages, often outdated, and overwhelming for someone just starting their research.
What was missing was the middle: a practical, honest, structured way to match a buyer's specific situation (budget, room dimensions, goals, experience level) to a specific build that fits.
That's what this site does. Our build configurator asks six questions and returns a tailored simulator package with reasoning for every component, prices from multiple retailers, and alternatives if you want to swap pieces. The supporting content — comparison pages, persona guides, calculators — is structured to answer real buyer questions rather than rehash generic listicles.
How We Make Recommendations
Our recommendations come from three sources:
Manufacturer specifications and documentation. We track current pricing, hardware specs, software compatibility, and subscription requirements directly from the manufacturers and authorized retailers.
Independent reviewer consensus. When evaluating product accuracy, build quality, and real-world performance, we synthesize from established sources including Breaking Eighty, MyGolfSpy, Practical Golf, Top Shelf Golf, Home Performance Lab, Golf Simulator Videos, and active community discussions on r/Golfsimulator and the Golf Simulator Forum. Where reviewers conflict, we note the disagreement.
Pattern analysis from our configurator. As the site grows, anonymized data from configurator runs helps us understand which combinations of room dimensions, budgets, and goals lead to which builds — surfacing real-world patterns rather than theoretical recommendations.
We are transparent about what we have hands-on experience with versus what we have synthesized from credible sources. We do not pretend to have personally tested every product in our catalog.
How We Make Money
Halfway House earns commissions when readers click through to our retail partners and make purchases. This does not change the price you pay. Our recommendations are based on what fits your situation — not on which retailer pays the highest commission. Where multiple retailers carry the same product, we typically default to the one with the best combination of price, service, and stock reliability for that specific item.
Read our full affiliate disclosure for details.
We do not accept payment from manufacturers in exchange for recommendations. We are not paid by SkyTrak, Foresight, Garmin, Bushnell, Uneekor, or any other manufacturer. Our affiliate relationships are with retailers who set their own commission rates.
What We're Not
We are not a retailer. We do not hold inventory, process orders, or handle returns. All purchases happen on our partner sites.
We are not a substitute for hands-on testing. If you are spending $5,000 or more, we encourage you to read multiple sources (including this one), watch video reviews of the specific products you're considering, and where possible, visit a showroom to see the gear in person.
We are not a substitute for the active home simulator community. The folks at r/Golfsimulator and the Golf Simulator Forum are an invaluable resource and we link to specific discussions throughout the site.
